Arnold Bennett nació en Hanley (Hanbridge, en sus novelas), Staffordshire, en 1867, uno de los seis pueblos que conformaban las Potteries junto con Stoke (Kype), Burslem (Bursley), Tunstall (Turnhill), Longton (Longton) y Fenton, y sin contar con este último, los cinco restantes formaban las Cinco ciudades . En 1910 se juntaron para formar Stoke-on-Trent, concediéndosele el estatus de ciudad en 1925. Comenzó su actividad laboral trabajando en el bufete de su padre. A los veintiún años se trasladó a Londres, ganando a esa edad un concurso literario organizado por la revista Tit-Bits.
