Empezó a estudiar Derecho, pero prefirió orientar su carrera hacia la literatura y colaboró asiduamente en la prensa. En este relato trata de forma brillante muchos de los temas recurrentes de su obra: la tensión entre los estilos de vida europeo y norteamericano, el inmovilismo entre clases sociales y la aparición de un nuevo prototipo de mujer: la que decide su futuro y se abre camino sola.
